TalkVermont Course Announced for December

Posted: September 30, 2019

Effective, empathic, and honest conversations between clinicians, patients, and families are the cornerstones of patient- and family-centered care. TalkVermont: Late Goals of Care is a one-day interactive course based on the national Vital Talk program, designed for practitioners who lead serious illness conversations (physicians, advanced practice nurses, physician assistants, social workers, nurses, and chaplains) with patients and families. Faculty will be from the Department of Palliative and Spiritual Care at CVMC, and the UVMMC Palliative Care Program. The course is brief and intense: nine hours of small group learning with palliative care specialists and simulated patients (actors).

Who: Anyone who in their profession has to initiate or reinforce information to patients and families about their serious illness is a candidate for this course. If you are engaged with patients and families about serious illness and goal-setting conversations in the face of illness, you are welcome at this training:

Learning Objectives: To build skills in leading honest, time-effective discussions with seriously ill patients and their families, including delivering challenging news, talking about prognosis, responding to emotion, and discussing goals of care and next steps in treatment.
