Overview
In this interactive session, we will discuss the growing challenge of aggressive and violent behavior in healthcare settings and some of the associated ethical tensions. We will summarize which healthcare workers are most affected and the impact of violence on healthcare worker well-being. We will end with a discussion of the ethical management of aggressive patient behavior: from de-escalation to setting boundaries and, in some situations, separation from non-urgent clinical care.
Learning Outcome(s)
At the conclusion of this learning activity, (at least 75% of) participants will be able to discuss the scope and impacts of the epidemic of violence directed at healthcare workers including at least three examples of ethical approaches to the management of aggressive patient behavior.
